Amman, Sept. 29 (Petra) -- The General Federation of Jordanian Trade Unions, in cooperation with the International Labor Organization (ILO), organized a legal session with specialized legal training for men and women working in Petra's tourism sector.

The aim is to raise awareness of legal protection in the workplace and encourage active union participation, according to a federation press statement issued Tuesday.

The session is part of the second phase of the "Union Power for a More Inclusive and Gender-Equal World of Work" project. The federation is implementing it with the Decent Work for Women Programme, with support from the government of Norway.

It included case studies and group exercises. It focused on basic rights and obligations under the labor law, such as work contracts, wages, working hours and leave.

It also covered protections under the social security law, including work injuries, maternity, unemployment and old age. Other topics were violence and harassment in the world of work, including their forms, protection mechanisms and how to file complaints.

Federation President Khaled Fanatsa said the training reflects the federation's push to widen its union and awareness work and reach workers where they work, in line with its strategic and reform plan.

ILO Country Coordinator in Jordan Amal Mowafy stressed the importance of the partnership with the federation. She said stronger union work begins with workers knowing their rights, being able to make their voices heard and taking an active part in social dialogue.

Head of Cooperation at the Norwegian Embassy in Jordan Birgitte Wessel, underscored the importance of cooperation and partnership in strengthening labor rights. She said workers' knowledge of their basic rights is the basis for protecting and empowering them.

Petra Development and Tourism Region Authority (PDTRA) Board of Commissioners Chairman Adnan Sawa'ir, highlighted the importance of complementary roles among partners in supporting workers and involving them in development.

He pointed to the role of national institutions in supporting the local community and boosting jobs and development in the Petra region.

The project team also made field visits in Petra to training centers, associations and local women-led initiatives. It reviewed women's experiences in jewelry making, clay crafts and food production.
