38/ Amman, Barcelona ink agreement to boost municipal cooperation
Amman, Sept. 14 (Petra) - The Greater Amman Municipality (GAM) and the City Council of Barcelona signed a memorandum of understanding on Monday to deepen municipal cooperation and advance joint urban development initiatives. The partnership seeks to modernize municipal management, improve core public services, and leverage technological innovation to boost residents' quality of life. Primary focus areas include urban planning, smart city infrastructure, accessibility, public space management, and digital transformation. The agreement was signed by GAM Committee Chairman Ahmad Malkawi and Barcelona Mayor Jaume Collboni Cuadrado. Citing long-standing bilateral relations, Malkawi pointed to upcoming initiatives in smart water systems, public spaces, and urban sustainability that position Barcelona as a core strategic partner for the capital. Barcelona Deputy Mayor Maria Eugènia Gay said the agreement reinforces cities' roles in solving global problems, building on past Amman-Barcelona collaboration in sustainability, resilience, and public policy. Under the agreement, the two cities will collaborate on smart city programs, digital services, accessibility, and environmental initiatives under Amman's Green City Action Plan, including stormwater management, flood mitigation, and green space maintenance. The agreement also aligns with Amman’s upcoming 2027–2031 Strategic Plan, establishing joint projects targeting vulnerable populations, particularly women and refugees in East Amman, alongside cultural, educational, and sports initiatives for local youth. //Petra// HA
