31/ Jordan, Chinese Firm Study Green Hydrogen Project
Amman, Sept. 14 (Petra) – Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources Saleh Kharabsheh on Monday signed a memorandum of understanding with Yin Mingshan, Chairman of China’s Getting International Energy Holdings Co. Ltd., to conduct technical studies for a green hydrogen and derivatives project in Jordan using renewable energy and desalinated water in Aqaba. Kharabsheh said the memorandum follows His Majesty King Abdullah II’s visit to China and is part of efforts to expand economic and investment cooperation between the two countries, particularly in green hydrogen. He noted that the royal visit included the signing of a comprehensive strategic memorandum of understanding with China’s National Energy Administration and discussions on cooperation in several areas, including green hydrogen projects involving Chinese companies. Kharabsheh said Jordan is working with several Chinese companies in the sector as part of its National Green Fuels Strategy. He added that the studies under the memorandum will assess the project’s technical and economic feasibility before a decision is made on its development and implementation. He also said access to new markets could improve the commercial viability of green hydrogen and derivative projects, adding that Jordan aims to move from preliminary studies and memoranda of understanding toward implementation where projects prove viable. The memorandum includes studying the possibility of locating the project near the Port of Aqaba and assessing its integrated value chain, including renewable energy generation, water desalination, green hydrogen and ammonia production, energy storage, electricity transmission, logistics, and port services. The studies will also assess the project’s technical, environmental, and social aspects, estimate hydrogen production costs, and determine land requirements. The Chinese company is expected to prepare a pre-feasibility-level technical study. //Petra// AO
