New York, Sept. 9 (Petra) -- The United States experienced its hottest summer on record this year since data collection began 132 years ago, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) reported on Wednesday.

According to data released by the agency, the meteorological summer spanning June through August 2026 and the month of August specifically broke historical temperature records. The average temperature across the contiguous United States during the summer season reached 74.37 degrees Fahrenheit (23.54 degrees Celsius), surpassing previous record highs set in 1936 and 2021 by 0.4 degrees Fahrenheit.

August set a milestone as the hottest August in recorded history, with an average temperature of 75.6 degrees Fahrenheit, while July 2026 earned the distinction of being the single hottest month ever recorded in the country.
