75/ UN chief warns of dangerous escalation in Strait of Hormuz, urges maximum restraint

New York, Sept. 9 (Petra) -- United Nations Secretary-General Ant?nio Guterres expressed deep concern on Wednesday following reports of escalating tensions and military incidents in and around the Strait of Hormuz over recent days, including attacks on commercial vessels and threats to maritime energy infrastructure.

In an official statement, Guterres stressed the vital importance of restoring and fully respecting navigation rights and freedom of navigation through the strategic waterway in accordance with international law. He urged all involved parties to exercise maximum restraint and refrain from actions or rhetoric that could further inflame an already volatile situation.

The UN chief warned that any further escalation risks severe consequences for civilian populations, regional stability, international peace and security, and the global economy. He called on all sides to fully utilize diplomatic channels to resolve outstanding disputes through dialogue and negotiation.

Guterres affirmed that the UN Secretariat stands ready to support all credible efforts aimed at de-escalating tensions and achieving a comprehensive, lasting resolution.
