64/ UN General Assembly to open 81st session Tuesday

New York, Sept. 7 (Petra) -- The United Nations General Assembly will open its 81st session on Tuesday evening with addresses by UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres and the president of the new session, Bangladesh’s Khalilur Rahman, who will take the oath of office during a morning session that will also conclude the 80th session.

On Sept. 22, heads of state and government will deliver speeches during the general debate as part of the high-level week, which is expected to bring together more than 100 heads of state and 46 heads of government, in addition to ministers and ambassadors.

During the presence of world leaders, the General Assembly will also hold several high-level meetings, including one to commemorate the 40th anniversary of the Declaration on the Right to Development; another on climate action and a just transition; a meeting addressing existential threats posed by rising sea levels; and one on pandemic prevention, preparedness, and response.

The Assembly will also convene a meeting to commemorate the 25th anniversary of the adoption of the Durban Declaration and Programme of Action, as well as a high-level plenary meeting to commemorate and promote the International Day for the Total Elimination of Nuclear Weapons.

Many international organizations also typically host a range of events on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly.
