Cairo, Sept. 7 (Petra) -- Arab foreign ministers on Monday approved the appointment of Ambassador Sherif Kamel, Egypt's nominee, as an assistant secretary-general of the Arab League for a five-year term.

The decision was taken during the 166th session of the Council of the League of Arab States at the level of foreign ministers.

The ministers also approved the appointment of Ambassador Badr Al-Din Ali Mohammed Al-Jaifari, nominated by the Republic of Sudan, and Sheikh Mohammed bin Daeij Al Khalifa, nominated by the Kingdom of Bahrain, as assistant secretaries-general of the Arab League for five-year terms.

The ministers also approved the renewal of the terms of Ambassador Hussein Al-Hindawi, Iraq's assistant secretary-general of the Arab League, and Ambassador Mohand Laajouzi, Algeria's assistant secretary-general, for a second five-year term.

The appointments and renewals are part of efforts to complete the structure of the Arab League's General Secretariat and strengthen its work during the next phase.
