Amman, Sept. 6 (Petra) -- HRH Princess Basma bint Talal on Sunday stressed the need for ethical and responsible use of artificial intelligence in scientific research, warning that excessive reliance on AI could affect academic integrity, originality, and critical-thinking skills.

Speaking at the opening of the University of Jordan’s second Annual Graduate Studies Conference, titled "Scientific Research in the Age of Artificial Intelligence," Princess Basma noted that AI has significantly advanced research, particularly for graduate students, by accelerating procedures and expanding data-driven analysis.

She emphasized, however, that AI should be used within clear ethical frameworks, cautioning that technological efficiency should not come at the expense of scientific values, originality, or human judgment.

Princess Basma also observed that while AI can analyze data and document events, it may not fully capture the depth of human suffering, particularly in conflict zones, where individual experiences risk being reduced to figures and statistics without sufficient human understanding, empathy, or ethical responsibility.

She urged graduates to develop modern technological skills, particularly in AI, and use them to address community challenges while preserving social values, ethical principles, and the ability to express the emotional dimensions of human experience.

The University of Jordan's Vice President for Quality and Local Accreditation, Amira Masri, described the conference as an opportunity to examine rapid global changes affecting academia and scientific research. She highlighted the role of graduate students in generating new research and noted the university’s responsibility to guide their work through rigorous scientific methodologies.

Masri explained that AI is reshaping research tools by accelerating discovery and data processing, but maintained that human judgment must remain central to the research process. She underscored the importance of academic integrity and research ethics as AI tools become more widely used, calling for transparent and responsible application governed by clear ethical standards that protect originality and intellectual property rights.

Masri also outlined the university’s efforts to support young researchers and promote applied research linked to national priorities, including water, energy, health, and the economy.

Dean of the School of Graduate Studies Laith Nasrawin noted that the conference comes amid rapid changes in how knowledge is produced, accessed, and shared, adding that AI has become an influential component across different stages of the research process.

Nasrawin explained that AI’s impact extends beyond faster access to information and data analysis to the formulation of research questions, verification of findings, and decisions over how far researchers should rely on such technologies.

He stressed that scientific and ethical responsibility remains with the researcher, warning that the greater risk is not AI replacing researchers, but researchers relinquishing their intellectual role to AI.

Nasrawin added that universities should move beyond framing AI use simply in terms of permission or restriction and instead develop academic frameworks that allow researchers to benefit from the technology while preserving independent scientific judgment and accountability.

The conference features 50 research papers across six fields: business, engineering, health sciences, science and technology, languages and social sciences, and law and Sharia sciences. Its opening also included a presentation on the School of Graduate Studies and a scientific poster exhibition featuring research by master’s and doctoral students from participating faculties.

The conference focuses on developments in scientific research amid digital transformation and the growing use of AI applications. It also provides graduate students with a platform to present and discuss research derived from their theses and dissertations.
