Salt, Sept 5 (Petra) -- Minister of Culture Mustafa Rawashdeh inaugurated on Saturday the fourth Balqa Festival, dedicated to the memory of the late Dr. Mohammad Al-Atiyat, at the Salt Development Corporation Theater, in the presence of local cultural leaders and attendees.

In his opening speech, Rawashdeh commemorated Al-Atiyat's contributions to poetry, literary criticism, and academic study, emphasizing the importance of introducing cultural figures to younger generations.

Rawashdeh highlighted Al-Atiyat's extensive bibliography, particularly his book "Salt: History and Figures," which aligns with the Ministry of Culture's focus on the Jordanian narrative connecting the land and its people.

The minister noted that the city of Salt and Balqa Governorate continue to serve as a hub for creative figures who have shaped Jordan's national identity and public discourse. He pointed to Salt High School as a cornerstone of Jordan's educational history, having produced prime ministers, ministers, senators, parliamentarians, and decision-makers across various sectors throughout the nation's history.

Rawashdeh praised the partnership between the Balqa Culture Directorate, local cultural bodies, and the community in organizing the festival, describing it as an event that fosters creative industries and local identity. He also announced that the Ministry of Culture will reprint Al-Atiyat's book "The Development of the Poetic Movement in Jordan."

Director of Balqa Culture Directorate Mona Saud said the choice of Al-Atiyat as the central figure for this edition honors his intellectual legacy and contributions to Jordanian literature, adding that documenting such figures helps preserve the national story.

The festival opening featured a performance by the Public Security Directorate Band, a documentary on Al-Atiyat's life, folk performances by the Salt Young Women’s Group and the Salt Folklore and Theatrical Group, a poetry recital by Mohammad Al-Jahalin, and a performance of the theatrical play "Zaal and Khadra."

The event also included children's activities, puppet shows, storytelling, and face painting. On the sidelines of the festival, Rawashdeh opened exhibitions showcasing cultural industries, books, and fine arts.
