9/ Parliamentary Delegation Concludes Participation in IPU General Assembly in Tanzania

Amman, Oct. 9 (Petra)-- A Jordanian parliamentary delegation, headed by First Deputy Speaker of the Lower House Khamis Hussein Atiyeh, has concluded its meetings at the 153rd Assembly of the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU), held in the United Republic of Tanzania.

During the assembly, Atiyeh held a series of bilateral parliamentary meetings with speakers and representatives of friendly parliaments to discuss ways to strengthen Jordanian parliamentary relations at the regional and international levels and mobilize international efforts in support of Arab causes.

Participants also commended Jordan’s steadfast positions, as reaffirmed by His Majesty King Abdullah II in his address to the 81st session of the United Nations General Assembly. These positions primarily included the Palestinian cause, the Hashemite custodianship over Islamic and Christian holy sites in Jerusalem, and Jordan’s firm stance on developments affecting the regional and international landscape.

MP Arwa Al-Hajaya headed the Jordanian delegation during the IPU General Assembly’s closing meeting and the election of the union’s secretary-general.

Members of the delegation also participated in meetings of the assembly’s standing committees, alongside representatives of sisterly and friendly parliaments. They stressed the importance of strengthening parliamentary cooperation and exchanging views on issues on the assembly’s agenda, particularly good governance, empowering local communities, and promoting inclusivity and trust.

At the conclusion of the 153rd IPU General Assembly, Australian House of Representatives Speaker Milton Dick was elected secretary-general of the union as part of the IPU Governing Council’s procedures for selecting its leadership.

The Jordanian delegation, headed by First Deputy Speaker Khamis Hussein Atiyeh, included MPs Arwa Al-Hajaya, Moataz Abu Rumman, Yanal Freihat, Ayatollah Freihat, Samer Al-Azaydeh, Omar Al-Khaldi, Huda Naffa, and Nour Abu Ghoush.
