6/ Cyber Crime Unit Warns Public Over Renewed Security Impersonation Scams

AMMAN, Oct. 5 (Petra) -- The Cyber Crime Unit has issued a fresh warning regarding a recurring scam in which fraudsters impersonate security personnel to target citizens, the Public Security Directorate (PSD) announced on Monday.

According to the PSD spokesperson, authorities continue to receive complaints involving unauthorized video and audio calls across various applications. In these scams, perpetrators pose as law enforcement officers, demanding personal documents and sensitive data under the guise of scheduling a follow-up security summons. The scammers then exploit the harvested information to compromise user accounts and drain financial assets before victims realize they have been targeted.

Law enforcement urged the public to exercise extreme caution when receiving unsolicited calls from unknown numbers, stressing that security agencies never use messaging or VoIP applications to conduct investigations or summon individuals. Citizens were advised never to share personal data over unverified phone calls.

The directorate urged anyone targeted by these scams to report them immediately via the 911 emergency hotline, the Cyber Crime Unit's official channels, or by visiting the nearest police station.
