Amman, Oct. 1 (Petra) - The Council of Arab Ministers Responsible for the Environment (CAMRE) named Amman the Arab Environment Capital during its 37th session in Cairo. Amman was awarded the Arab Environment Capital shield, while the cities of Salalah in Oman and AlUla in Saudi Arabia received certificates of appreciation for their environmental efforts. Amman was selected after being assessed across 13 environmental and urban criteria, including climate change mitigation, sustainable land use, green transit, air quality, waste and water management, eco-innovation, and community involvement. Commenting on the achievement, Minister of Environment Aiman Suleiman stated that the title reflects regional recognition of the Kingdom's environmental initiatives. He noted that upcoming plans will focus on improving solid waste management and recycling, expanding green spaces, boosting air quality, and promoting sustainable transit through electric vehicles, solar energy, and smart technology. On relevant future vision, Suleiman stressed the need to bolster partnerships among the Ministry of Environment, the Greater Amman Municipality, the private sector, and civil society to scale up sustainability projects and resource efficiency. The designation aligns with the Economic Modernization Vision, which focuses green growth, sustainable transport, resource efficiency, and urban climate resilience to improve overall quality of life. //Petra// HA
