8/ Amra City Workshop Discusses Sustainable Water Planning

Amman, May 17 (Petra) -- The Jordan Company for Developing Cities and Facilities held a specialized workshop on the Amra City project, bringing together experts and specialists to discuss water-related challenges and opportunities in the context of sustainable urban planning.

During the session, participants discussed three main themes. The first focused on available water sources for Amra City, reviewing the National Water Carrier project, Disi water, and other supplementary sources, as well as the potential of groundwater, rainwater harvesting, and dams surrounding the city as strategic resources that could strengthen water security and support long-term self-sufficiency.

The second theme addressed water recycling systems and their requirements, particularly the comparison between centralized and decentralized water treatment models. Participants also reviewed greywater and blackwater treatment pathways and reuse mechanisms, stressing the importance of setting clear and ambitious water recycling targets aligned with the city’s scale and development needs.

The third theme focused on water and wastewater networks. Participants examined standards for continuous versus intermittent water supply and the design considerations associated with each model. They also discussed network types, existing challenges that should be avoided during the planning stage, and mechanisms for managing water loss to improve consumption efficiency and reduce waste to the minimum levels.

Participants emphasized the importance of building an integrated water system that places efficiency and sustainability at the core of planning and design. They said such a system would help secure Amra City’s long-term water needs and establish an advanced urban model capable of managing its water resources prudently in a way that meets the aspirations of future generations.
