17/ Princess Muna highlights Jordan’s nursing model during Romania visit

Amman, May 17 (Petra) -- Her Royal Highness Princess Muna Al Hussein, patron for nursing and midwifery at the World Health Organization’s Eastern Mediterranean Regional Office and global ambassador for the International Council of Nurses, participated in a series of high-level academic and healthcare events in Bucharest last week, underscoring Jordan’s advanced standing in the nursing and midwifery sectors at the international level.

According to a statement issued Sunday by the Jordanian Nursing Council, the visit reflected Her Highness’s leading role in supporting and advancing the nursing profession, while highlighting Jordan’s national experience in nursing education and professional practice as a model that can be leveraged internationally.

As part of the visit, Princess Muna received an honorary doctorate in medical and human sciences from the Carol Davila University of Medicine and Pharmacy on May 12, in recognition of her humanitarian contributions and her efforts in developing nursing and strengthening healthcare systems locally, regionally, and globally.

Rector of the university Viorel Jinga said Princess Muna’s contributions to advancing nursing education and healthcare delivery have established a global benchmark for leadership in the health sector and contributed to the development of modern healthcare systems.

Princess Muna expressed pride in receiving the distinction, noting that safeguarding human health is a humanitarian mission that transcends borders and cultures. She said the recognition reflects appreciation for nurses across Jordan.

The ceremony was attended by Romanian officials and healthcare leaders, including Head of the Emergency Department at Romania’s Ministry of Interior Raed Arafat, President of the Order of Nurses, Midwives and Medical Assistants in Romania Mircea Timofte, President of the Senate of the University of Medicine and Pharmacy Dragos Vinereanu, and Faculty of Midwifery and Nursing Victor Strambu.

Jordanian participants included Her Highness’s advisor for health and community development Ruwaida Maayta, Jordan’s Ambassador to Romania Mu'taz Khasawneh, and Secretary-General of the Jordanian Nursing Council Hani Nawafleh.

On May 13, Princess Muna participated in celebrations marking International Nurses and Midwives Day at an event organized by the Romanian Nursing Association under the theme "Empowered Nurses Save Lives," within the framework of the national PERFORM project aimed at developing nursing specialties.

During the event, Princess Muna called for sustained investment in nursing and midwifery education and professional development, describing nurses and midwives as "heroes" for their continued service and dedication.

Nawafleh presented Jordan’s model for advanced nursing practice and specialization, which is based on a national vision led by Princess Muna, while Maayta stressed the importance of integrating the International Council of Nurses’ modern nursing framework into academic curricula and professional competencies.

On the final day of the visit, Princess Muna toured the headquarters of the Romanian Order of Nurses, Midwives and Medical Assistants, where discussions focused on expanding cooperation between the Jordanian Nursing Council and the Romanian association in training, accreditation standards, emergency care, and professional exchange programs.

The Romanian side expressed readiness to host Jordanian nursing personnel to benefit from Romania’s expertise in emergency and ambulance services, while also seeking to send a Romanian delegation to Jordan to review the Kingdom’s experience in regulating nursing education and practice.

Princess Muna welcomed the initiative and highlighted Jordan’s commitment to strengthening international cooperation in the healthcare and nursing sectors.
