43/ Jordan, Qatar Discuss Expanding Cultural Cooperation at Doha Book Fair

Amman, May 14 (Petra)-- Minister of Culture Mustafa Al-Rawashdeh held official talks with Qatar’s Minister of Culture, Sheikh Abdulrahman bin Hamad Al Thani, on the sidelines of the Doha International Book Fair, focusing on ways to strengthen cultural cooperation between the two countries.

According to a statement issued by the ministry on Thursday, the meeting was attended by Jordan’s Ambassador in Doha Zaid Al-Lozi and Director General of the National Library Firas Al-Darabah.
The discussions covered plans to deepen cultural ties through joint activities, including cultural weeks and festivals, as well as cooperation in training and the exchange of expertise.

The two sides also discussed Qatar’s participation as the guest of honor at the 40th Jerash Festival for Culture and Arts.

Al-Rawashdeh expressed admiration for Qatar’s experience in documenting history and producing national encyclopedias, praising the country’s rich cultural and artistic heritage.

He said Qatari culture reflects a blend of Arab authenticity and modern openness, inspired by maritime traditions, pearl diving, desert life, music, folk songs, and distinctive architecture.

During the opening ceremony of the fair, which was patronized by Qatari Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al Thani, Al-Rawashdeh highlighted the strong ties between Jordan and Qatar, describing them as a reflection of the close relations fostered by His Majesty King Abdullah II and Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani.

He also commended the organization of the event and Qatar’s hospitality, praising the country’s role as a cultural and intellectual hub in the region.

On the sidelines of the exhibition, Al-Rawashdeh toured the booths of Jordanian publishers and reaffirmed the ministry’s support for creative cultural industries.

He noted that the participation of around 40 Jordanian publishing houses demonstrates the strength of Jordan’s publishing sector, adding that the Doha International Book Fair, held under the slogan "From Engraving to Writing," serves as a major cultural platform that promotes intellectual and cultural exchange and encourages reading among younger generations.

Al-Rawashdeh further emphasized the fair’s historical significance as one of the oldest and largest book fairs in the region since its launch in 1972.
