7/ Jordan Hosts MENA Regional Conference on Independent Media and Digital Literacy

Amman, May 11 (Petra) – Minister of Government Communication and Government Spokesperson Mohammad Al-Momani emphasized today that professional, independent media remains a fundamental pillar of societal stability and public awareness.

Speaking at the regional conference for the Middle East and North Africa titled "Professional Independent Media – Strong Society," Al-Momani addressed the rapid digital transformations that have recalibrated the global information landscape.

The symposium, organized by the Community Media Network to coincide with World Press Freedom Day, serves as a high-level platform for discussing the dualities of the digital age.

Minister Al-Momani noted that while the digital environment has democratized access to information and fostered unprecedented public engagement, it has simultaneously introduced systemic risks, including the proliferation of disinformation, rumors, and hate speech. This paradigm shift, he argued, necessitates a doubling of professional standards and an entrenched sense of ethical responsibility among media practitioners.

The Minister articulated Jordan’s official stance on the sector as a balanced equation that champions freedom of expression while mandating professional accountability and legal compliance.

He stressed that professional media is not merely a transmitter of data but a primary architect of public consciousness and national stability. Al-Momani specifically highlighted the necessity of media and information literacy, particularly for the youth, to cultivate critical thinking and the capacity to distinguish verified data from manipulated digital content.

He also commended the role of community media outlets, such as Radio al-Balad, in amplifying the voices of local provinces and underserved demographics that are often marginalized by traditional media conglomerates.

A significant outcome of the Amman summit is the imminent announcement of the "MENA Community Radio Union" from the capital. This institutional move is expected to act as a regional force multiplier, enhancing cross-border collaboration, technical exchange, and the strategic development of community-based broadcasting.

Over the course of two days, the conference will facilitate specialized sessions involving regional experts, legal scholars, and journalists focused on optimizing the opportunities provided by digital transformation while bolstering transparency and accountability. Discussions will center on establishing robust professional and technical standards to ensure the fluid, accurate flow of information, a priority that Al-Momani highlighted as critical given the current regional security environment and the ongoing "Jordanian Narrative" project.
