3/ Jordan to Host GCF Regional Office, Expanding Access to Climate Finance

Amman, March 29 (Petra) -- Jordan's selection to host the regional office of the Green Climate Fund (GCF) is set to strengthen access to climate finance and accelerate project implementation across the region, Minister of Environment Ayman Suleiman said.

Suleiman described the move as both a national milestone and a regional responsibility, noting that it will support capacity building, enhance knowledge exchange, and facilitate the rollout of joint climate initiatives, particularly in areas such as water scarcity and renewable energy.

He said the development aligns with the broader national direction to expand international climate partnerships and advance coordinated action to address climate change, while supporting countries most vulnerable to its impacts.

The establishment of the office in Amman is expected to reinforce Jordan’s positioning as a regional hub for climate action and sustainable development, reflecting growing international confidence in the Kingdom’s role in advancing environmental initiatives.

Through the new office, Jordan will work to strengthen regional coordination, support the development of climate programs, and expand collaborative initiatives aimed at improving resilience and adaptation to climate change impacts.

The Green Climate Fund announced that the new regional office in Amman will cover Eastern Europe, Central Asia, and the Middle East, marking the first such office hosted by an Arab country.

GCF Secretary Artur Cardoso de Lacerda said the expansion reflects a strategic shift toward increasing the fund’s regional presence, which is expected to accelerate project development, strengthen partnerships, and enhance delivery on the ground.

BRCCJ Project Director Maisoon Al-Zoubi said the move represents a strategic gain for the region, particularly for sectors such as agriculture, noting that it will facilitate access to financing and technical support while improving the efficiency of climate adaptation efforts.

The development is expected to support regional climate priorities and strengthen the implementation of sustainability-focused projects across multiple sectors.
