47/ UN General Assembly Declares Transatlantic Slave Trade ‘Grave Crime Against Humanity’

New York, March 25 (Petra) -- The United Nations General Assembly adopted a resolution on Wednesday declaring that the trafficking and enslavement of Africans on racial grounds "constitutes the most heinous crime committed against humanity."

The resolution was supported by 123 countries, including Jordan; opposed by three countries the United States, Israel, and Argentina and 52 countries abstained.

The resolution firmly condemns the enslavement of Africans and the transatlantic slave trade as "the most extreme and long-lasting forms of inhumane injustice," reaffirming collective recognition of the deep and enduring impacts of oppressive slavery and colonial systems, as well as the ongoing racial discrimination and neocolonial practices affecting people of African descent.

It emphasizes the importance of addressing historical injustices suffered by Africans and people of African descent in a manner that upholds justice, human rights, dignity, and recovery, noting that reparations are a tangible step toward rectifying historical wrongs.

The General Assembly called on member states to engage in comprehensive and good-faith dialogue on restorative justice, including issuing full and formal apologies and implementing measures for recognition, compensation, rehabilitation, reconciliation, and guarantees of non-recurrence.
