Amman, March 25 (Petra) – The Lower House's Energy and Mineral Resources Committee, chaired by MP Ayman Abu Hanieh, on Wednesday lauded the government's successfully management to ensure an uninterrupted supply of electricity to the public despite regional tensions that sent operating costs soaring.

The committee commended around-the-clock efforts by national cadres to maintain the sector's stability.

It said during a meeting today that resorting to diesel-powered generating stations was a necessary option within the contingency plan, which led to a noticeable increase in daily costs amid a surge in global oil prices, which posed unprecedented challenge to the Kingdom's energy sector.

Achieving national energy security based on local resources, it said, became a pressing priority, along with raising public awareness about the importance of rationalizing energy consumption.

The committee passed recommendations, including launching a national program to expand renewable energy projects, particularly solar and wind power, and expediting work on oil shale and Risha gas projects.

It called for enabling the industrial sector to transition to alternative energy sources to reduce production costs, strengthening public-private partnerships in energy projects, and launching intensive national awareness campaigns to promote energy conservation.

Enhancing energy security is a top national priority and requires concerted official and community efforts through effective policies and sustainable awareness programs, it said.
