27/ Health Minister: Drug, raw material stocks enough for 12 months

Amman, March 25 (Petra) – The health sector in Jordan is stable with a strategic stockpile of ready-made medicines enough to meet the Kingdom's needs for six months, in addition to raw materials used in drug manufacturing sufficient for an additional six months, offering a year's worth of pharmaceutical security, Health Minister Ibrahim Bdour assured on Wednesday.

He said the ministry has been working since early on to put in place contingency plans and strategic stockpiles of medicines and medical supplies to address any repercussions from the regional crisis.

The minister said a crisis cell of 16 experts was formed to monitor details on the ground and ensure sustainable supply chains.

He assured that there is no intention to raise drug prices, confirming that pharmaceutical imports and exports are proceeding normally, with most medications available in government hospitals and private pharmacies.

Bdour said his ministry gave strict instructions to hospitals to raise gas and diesel reserves to run generators and essential services. Hospitals were ordered to replenish stocks when they reach 70 percent as a proactive measure, instead of a previously 30 percent.

He also spoke of close coordination with the private sector for any technical or logistical support, in addition to specialized technical teams to ensure the efficiency of mechanical and electrical systems in all hospitals under all circumstances.

For his part, Jordan Pharmacists Association President Zeid Kilani told Petra in an interview that collaboration between the pharmaceutical and industrial sectors with the Health Ministry and the Jordan Food and Drug Administration guarantees medicine's availability and supply despite current regional circumstances.

He pointed to dozens of pharmaceutical factories in the Kingdom that are operating with a high degree of integration. These have a strategic reserve of raw materials for over six months, which enhances the country's self-reliance during crises, he added.
