25/ Three UN Peacekeepers Wounded in Shelling of UNIFIL Position in South Lebanon

Beirut, March 7 (Petra) -- The Lebanese Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Emigrants said that amid ongoing military operations, a position of the Ghanaian battalion serving in the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) came under shelling on Friday evening.

The position, located in the town of Qawzah, was hit by the bombardment, wounding three peacekeepers, one of them seriously. The injured soldier was transferred to a hospital in Beirut to receive treatment.

In a statement issued on Saturday, the ministry said it was awaiting the results of investigations by UNIFIL to determine the circumstances of the serious attack, stressing its condemnation of the incident in the strongest terms, regardless of the party responsible.

The ministry stressed that the attack constitutes a serious violation of international law and relevant United Nations Security Council resolutions, foremost among them United Nations Security Council Resolution 1701.

It reiterated its categorical rejection of any targeting of peacekeeping forces carrying out the noble mission of maintaining international peace and security, expressed full solidarity with Ghana and the leadership of UNIFIL, and wished a speedy recovery to the injured soldiers.
