13/ Jordan, UK Sign £5.3M Grant MoU for Water Carrier Project

Amman, March 2 (Petra) -- Minister of Planning and International Cooperation Zeina Toukan and British Ambassador Philip Hall on Monday signed a memorandum of understanding to support Jordan’s National Water Carrier Project (also known as the Aqaba-Amman Water Desalination and Conveyance Project) with £5.3M in funding under the Water Adaptation, Desalination and Infrastructure (WADI) Program.

According to a ministry statement, Toukan welcomed the Jordanian-British partnership and expressed appreciation for the UK’s support for the strategic project, which is expected to strengthen sustainable water-resource management, support climate-change adaptation, and help ensure safe and uninterrupted water supply. She said the initiative aligns with the Economic Modernization Vision, which identifies water infrastructure as a cornerstone for sustainable growth and resilience.

Hall said the agreement reaffirms the Jordan-UK partnership and their shared commitment to long-term water resilience, improved governance, and the development of sustainable infrastructure serving communities across Jordan.

He added that in addition to the grant, the UK has established a risk-management facility through the WADI Program to provide technical assistance to the National Water Carrier Project Management Unit.

The facility aims to enhance the unit’s capacity to anticipate, assess, and manage emerging risks, supporting more effective implementation and optimizing the use of financial resources.
