45/ Culture Minister: National narrative goes beyond recording history to documenting civilizational heritage

Karak, June 15 (Petra) -- Minister of Culture Mustafa Rawashdeh said that the national narrative is not merely the recording of history or the documentation of events and facts, but rather a response to the need to preserve the civilizational heritage that has evolved on Jordanian soil over centuries, as well as the manner in which events are recounted and the principles upon which the modern Jordanian state was founded.

Speaking at a cultural seminar titled "The Jordanian Narrative," organized by the Manshiyat Abu Hammour Sports Club in cooperation with the Karak Directorate of Culture on Monday evening, Rawashdeh said efforts to document the national narrative are aligned with the vision of His Royal Highness Crown Prince Al Hussein bin Abdullah II.

He stressed the responsibility of presenting Jordan's history, stories, traditions and defining moments through documented and knowledge-based formats suited to contemporary audiences, including films, stories, television dramas, theatrical productions, workshops and academic research.

Rawashdeh noted that the national narrative is not a closed framework but an open space and a collection of pages that can continually be documented and examined to better understand and interpret historical events and connect them to the present. While rooted in Jordan's geography, he said, it also intersects with and extends beyond multiple geographic and cultural contexts.

He said the Ministry of Culture, which is overseeing the Jordanian Narrative Documentation Project, has formed several committees comprising academics and experts in history, archaeology, geography, geology, anthropology and literature to document the historical eras that have shaped Jordan.

The minister added that all collected materials will be preserved within a national archive. He said a nationwide program of lectures, seminars and discussions addressing narratives across various fields of knowledge will be launched, while a digital platform titled "Stories from Jordan" will allow citizens to contribute to enriching the national narrative.

Concluding his remarks, Rawashdeh said: "The narrative is about how we tell our history and our stories, the forms and tools we use to present them to the world, and the values they embody."

The seminar highlighted the importance of the Jordanian national narrative in strengthening national identity and promoting values of belonging and loyalty, while reviewing key historical milestones that contributed to the building of the Jordanian state and its achievements across various sectors.

Participants stressed the importance of such events in deepening understanding of the Jordanian narrative, reinforcing its national significance, and raising awareness of Jordan's historical and civilizational role, as well as its development journey and accomplishments.
