24/ Jordan Boosts Water Security with US-Funded Al Hasa Project

Amman, June 15 (Petra) --- Secretary-General of the Jordan Valley Authority (JVA) Hisham Haisa on Monday inaugurated a project to rehabilitate and expand Al Hasa reservoir in South Jordan Valley’s Ghor Al-Safi, funded by the U.S. Embassy in Amman to improve water resource management and support agricultural sustainability.

Haisa said the reservoir is a key water facility in the southern Jordan Valley that supports agricultural water infrastructure, managing around 24 million cubic meters of water annually, irrigating approximately 55,000 dunums, and supplying water for industrial use and nearby communities, while the JVA continues to develop the water management system in line with the national water sector strategy.

The project includes increasing storage capacity, upgrading control and operation systems, and improving sedimentation and treatment facilities to reduce water loss and enhance irrigation efficiency amid climate change challenges.

Haisa noted U.S. support for Jordan’s water sector over several decades, noting that with a total funding of about JD1.4 million, the project will improve water collection, storage and distribution systems, reduce water loss and strengthen service continuity.

Upon completion, the upgraded facility is expected to help manage millions of cubic meters of water annually, serve nearly 50 percent of irrigated agricultural land in the southern Jordan Valley, and support industrial use as well as drinking water supply for nearby communities.

Al Hasa reservoir is a key strategic water facility in the southern Jordan Valley, used for irrigation, industrial supply and drinking water.

The rehabilitation and expansion scheme aims to boost the reservoir’s capacity to perform these critical functions, while improving management of scarce water resources in one of Jordan’s most water-stressed regions.

The project reflects strong U.S. support for Jordan and a shared commitment of both countries to addressing water challenges and enhancing water security for communities across the Kingdom.
