11/ US Lawmakers demand scrutiny of Israeli settlement funding
Amman, June 13 (Petra) – More than 40 Democratic members of the US House of Representatives signed a letter demanding that the US Departments of State and Treasury disclose how legal restrictions are being applied to the US loan guarantee program for Israel. The letter comes amid a growing shift within the Palestinian-American movement, from focusing exclusively on military aid to targeting the funding networks, investments, and financial privileges that contribute to ongoing expansion of settlements. Over the past two years, numerous campaigns have emerged targeting public investments, pension funds, and US government programs linked to Israel. Activists view the loan guarantee program as one of the least discussed issues, despite its significant financial importance. The program grants Israel significant advantages when borrowing from global markets through US guarantees that reduce borrowing costs and provide more favorable financial terms. However, the Congress members who signed the letter want to know whether successive US administrations have actually implemented the laws that require them to account for settlement-related spending and deduct it from the value of the guarantees granted. //Petra//SS
