17/ Aqaba Gears Up for World Cup With Fan Zones, Tourism Initiatives and Community Events

Aqaba, June 11 (Petra) -- Aqaba is preparing to welcome the 2026 FIFA World Cup with a series of youth, tourism and community initiatives designed to create a vibrant atmosphere for fans as the national team prepares for its historic debut on football's biggest stage.

Across the coastal city, public institutions, youth centers and tourism establishments have intensified preparations to host supporters and provide dedicated spaces for following the tournament, which gets underway on Thursday.

Director of the Aqaba Youth Directorate Ahmad Al-Hassan said all technical and logistical arrangements have been completed to facilitate public screenings of World Cup matches in cooperation with security agencies and relevant authorities.

The preparations include the installation of viewing screens at youth centers in Quweira, Aqaba, Disi, Risha and Quraiqira, alongside giant outdoor screens in public squares to accommodate large crowds expected to follow the tournament.

Al-Hassan said the initiative is part of a comprehensive plan aimed at creating a safe and organized environment for supporters while promoting national unity and community engagement during the competition.

He noted that special attention has been given to the national team's participation, which marks the country's first appearance at a FIFA World Cup.

Beyond sporting activities, the tournament has also inspired local tourism and environmental initiatives.

The Aqaba Bird Observatory launched a digital campaign combining support for the national team with the promotion of environmental tourism and the country's natural heritage.

The initiative incorporates the image of the national bird, the Petra and Wadi Rum goldfinch, into a digital version of the national team's jersey, allowing users to share the design across social media platforms.

The campaign seeks to highlight environmental attractions within the Golden Triangle tourism region while celebrating the national team's historic qualification for the tournament.

Director of the Aqaba Bird Observatory Firas Al-Rahahleh said the initiative reflects the country's significance as a major stop along one of the world's most important migratory bird routes and showcases Aqaba's role as a seasonal refuge for millions of birds each year.

He added that the campaign provides an opportunity to combine national pride with environmental awareness through a symbol that reflects both the country's natural heritage and its sporting achievement.

Meanwhile, cafés, restaurants and tourism facilities across Aqaba have begun preparing for increased visitor activity during the tournament.

Business owners said venues have installed large screens, expanded seating areas and introduced special offers tailored to football fans seeking to watch the matches in a communal atmosphere.

The national team is set to begin its World Cup campaign next week, with anticipation growing among supporters eager to witness the country's first appearance at the global tournament.

As excitement builds, Aqaba is positioning itself as a focal point for celebrations and fan engagement, blending sport, tourism and community participation in support of the national team.
