29/ Assistant House Speaker, social activists discuss draft local administration legislation

Amman, June 10 (Petra) – Assistant Lower House Speaker, MP Maysoun Qawab'ah on Tuesday discussed a draft local administration law with social activists and people interested in public affairs, part of a participatory approach to enhance dialogue on legislation governing the work of local administration.

In a press release by the legislature, Qawab'ah said the bill is "a significant milestone" in the administrative reform process and bolstering decentralization.

Developing legislation on local administration contributes to empowering elected councils to perform their developmental and service-oriented roles more efficiently, and enhances citizen participation in decision-making at the local level, she stressed.

Parliament is tuned to various viewpoints and keen to benefit from expertise when debating draft laws, ensuring that the legislation caters to the needs of citizens and keeps pace with the development requirements in the governorates, she said.

Qawabah said social activists and civil society organizations have a key role in enriching the legislative process with constructive proposals and ideas, stressing that dialogue and consultation are pillars for achieving more effective legislation that addresses challenges.

The session went over key aspects of the bill, including the powers of local councils, coordination among administrative units, promoting transparency and accountability, expanding citizen participation in setting development priorities, and exploring ways to improve the efficiency of services provided to local communities.
