15/ Global Media Spotlight Jordan’s World Cup Debut
Amman, June 4 (Petra) -- International media outlets highlighted Jordan’s national football team ahead of its first FIFA World Cup appearance, set to kick off June 11 in the United States, Canada, and Mexico. Reuters said Jordan is enjoying a "golden era" after runs to the 2023 Asian Cup and 2025 Arab Cup finals, adding that the team does not intend to "just make up the numbers" ?at their first World Cup. It said the Nashama have emerged as a force in Arab football since Moroccan coach Jamal Sellami took charge in June 2024, building on the work of his predecessor, Hussein Ammouta. Reuters quoted Sellami as saying the team is capable of producing an upset similar to Algeria’s win over Germany in 1982, Cameroon’s victory over defending champion Argentina in 1990, and Senegal’s win over defending champion France in 2002. Swiss broadcaster Blue News highlighted Jordan among four World Cup debutants, noting the national role of the "Nashama" identity, a term it said is difficult to translate precisely into German but could mean "brave" or "honorable." The Mirror said Jordanian football has made major progress in recent years, culminating in its first World Cup qualification. NBC 5 said Jordanians living in the United States feel a special sense of pride ahead of the historic event, quoting Dallas resident Naghim Abuarafah as saying she would not miss the chance to watch Jordan play. //Petra// AO
