10/ Human Rights, Press Freedom and AI Take Center Stage at Jordan Media Institute Dialogue

Amman, June 4 (Petra) -- Human rights, press freedoms and the growing impact of artificial intelligence on journalism were at the forefront of discussions during a dialogue hosted by the Jordan Media Institute, bringing together media students and senior European officials to examine some of the most pressing challenges facing the profession.

The event, held in the presence of Princess Rym Ali, founder of the Jordan Media Institute, featured Kajsa Ollongren, the European Union's Special Representative for Human Rights, who engaged with students on the EU's human rights policies and its approach to emerging global challenges.

The discussion, moderated by Institute Dean Dr. Ziad Al-Rifai, explored a broad range of issues, including journalists' rights in conflict zones, media freedoms, the protection of children and civilians during armed conflicts, regulation of social media platforms and the balance between protecting fundamental freedoms and ensuring accountability.

Participants also examined how the European Union formulates its human rights policies and discussed the evolving relationship between Europe, Jordan and the Arab region on issues related to human rights and democratic governance.

Students raised questions about human rights developments in Gaza, the West Bank and Lebanon, as well as international efforts aimed at protecting journalists from violence, assassinations and attacks while carrying out their work in conflict areas.

The session also addressed the intersection between security and defense policies and the protection of freedom of expression, alongside discussions on the role of international sanctions in responding to human rights violations.

Artificial intelligence and technological transformation emerged as key themes during the dialogue, with participants examining the implications of AI for the future of journalism and the increasing importance of verification tools and fact-checking mechanisms in combating misinformation and safeguarding media credibility.

Ollongren highlighted the importance of maintaining strong protections for human rights and press freedoms amid rapid technological change, while emphasizing the need for responsible approaches to emerging digital challenges.

She also praised Jordan's reform trajectory and commended the Kingdom's progress in a number of areas related to human rights and institutional development.

The event was attended by European Union Ambassador to Jordan Pierre-Christophe Chatzisavas, National Centre for Human Rights Commissioner General Jamal Al-Shamayleh, Tunisian Ambassador Moufida Zaribi, as well as students and graduates of the institute's Master's program in Journalism and New Media.

The dialogue formed part of broader efforts by the Jordan Media Institute to connect students with international policymakers and practitioners, while encouraging discussions on the evolving relationship between journalism, technology, human rights and public policy.
