36/ 100 Municipalities Plant 70,000 Trees Under Jordan’s National Greening Campaign

Amman, Jan. 22 (Petra)-- A total of 100 municipalities out of 104 across the Kingdom planted around 70,000 trees on Thursday as part of the National Afforestation and Greening Campaign, implemented by the Ministry of Local Administration in partnership and coordination with the Ministries of Youth and Agriculture.

The campaign aims to plant more than 250,000 forest and shade trees across municipalities nationwide before the end of February.

The Ministry of Local Administration said the initiative covers all municipalities in the Kingdom, with intensified efforts continuing throughout the current month and next to ensure the sustainability of the newly planted trees. The campaign is taking advantage of favorable winter weather conditions, particularly increased soil moisture resulting from rainfall.

The ministry noted that the campaign will continue through January and February, helping to improve the survival rate of the trees, strengthen their root systems, and reduce the need for irrigation. This aligns with national priorities to protect the environment and expand green spaces.

Tree-planting activities involved municipal staff, joint services councils, municipal affairs departments, as well as volunteers from youth centers, agriculture directorates, education directorates, the Public Security Directorate, civil society organizations, and local communities. The ministry called on the public to actively participate in the campaign.

The ministry also instructed municipalities to plant trees along major and ring roads surrounding cities to create what is known as a "green belt." It stressed the importance of caring for planted sites and ensuring their sustainability, expanding green coverage, improving environmental and urban landscapes, and mitigating the impacts of climate change.
