22/ Environment Ministry Says Emissions at Qatraneh Factory Water Vapor

Amman, Jan. 21 (Petra) – The Ministry of Environment said the visible emissions observed from the chimney of a ceramic tile factory in the Qatraneh district are water vapor generated during the clay drying process and do not constitute air pollutants.

In a statement, the ministry said inspection teams were dispatched Wednesday morning, under the direction of Minister of Environment Ayman Suleiman, to conduct a field inspection of the facility as part of routine environmental monitoring and oversight procedures.

The ministry explained that the dense vapor was linked to low temperatures associated with current cold weather conditions, noting that inspections did not indicate the presence of harmful air pollutant emissions.

It added that the factory has held environmental approval since 2023 after completing an environmental impact assessment study and operates advanced bag filter systems in its drying unit, which effectively prevent the release of fine particulate matter into the surrounding air.

As part of proactive monitoring measures, the ministry said sensors will be installed to measure emissions from the factory’s chimney and electronically link them to the ministry’s central monitoring system, enabling continuous, real-time oversight.

The ministry said these steps are consistent with its policy of promptly responding to citizens’ observations and strengthening environmental monitoring and control mechanisms to safeguard the environment and public health.
