20/ Taani: Jordan, a Regional Leader in Digital Energy
Amman, Jan. 19 (Petra) -- Jordan is the best environment for digital energy in the Middle East, successfully establishing itself as a pioneer in energy and digital transformation, Secretary-General of the Arab Renewable Energy Commission (AREC) Mohammed Taani said. He made the remark in a strategic paper on digital energy presented at the recent World Energy Summit in Abu Dhabi, attended by decision-makers, experts, and international institutions concerned with energy and sustainability, AREC said in a statement on Monday. Jordan, Taani said, has positioned itself as a leading country in energy and digital transformation, with renewable energy contributing more than 30 percent of total electricity demand, equal to about 2.8 gigawatts. The kingdom, he said, has also issued modern electricity and energy storage regulations and built the largest infrastructure for electric vehicle charging and energy storage in the Middle East, backed by a package of incentives and tax exemptions to encourage energy transition, technology adoption, and environmental protection. He noted that Jordan ranks among the region’s best in handling digital energy as a recognized right for every citizen and resident, within an integrated model, where state institutions treat it as part of the country’s basic rights and sustainable development framework. Global forecasts show that the world will produce more than 350 million electric vehicles by 2035, while global energy demand is expected to rise by over 150 percent, compared with current levels, with renewable energy projected to be the main global source in the near future, Taani said. In his paper, he also addressed global energy access challenges, noting that over 1.5 billion people worldwide lack electricity access, while more than 3.5 billion are without internet services. "This makes digital energy a critical element for sustainable development and social equity," he said. AREC announced the launch of its initiative "Digital Energy as a Basic Human Right," aiming to establish fair access to energy and technology as essential pillars of comprehensive and sustainable development. //Petra// NQ
