28/ Recent rainfall replenishes seasonal wetlands in Azraq Basin

Azraq, Jan. 18 (Petra) – Manager of the Azraq Wetland Reserve Hazem Al-Hreisha said recent rainfall has helped replenish seasonal water bodies in the Azraq Basin, the lowest point in the Azraq District, where rainwater accumulates through wadis that drain into the area.

Al-Hreisha told the Jordan News Agency (Petra) on Sunday that the Azraq Basin functions as a natural reservoir capable of absorbing large volumes of seasonal flash floods, mitigating their impact and enhancing environmental benefits. He explained that the rainfall contributes to recharging the aquifer, helping improve groundwater levels and offset part of the deficit caused by pumping and extraction, in addition to expanding green cover in the spring.

He noted that, according to data from the climatic station at the Azraq Wetland Reserve, recorded rainfall amounted to 98.4 millimeters in 2023, 36.9 millimeters in 2024, and 68.1 millimeters in 2025.

He added that the rains and floods have had a significant impact on filling other seasonal wetlands within the reserve, which in turn form important habitats for birds and wildlife and a rich source of food. He pointed out that the Azraq Basin and the reserve lie along one of the world’s most important bird migration routes, making them a key habitat for large numbers of migratory and resident birds, as well as a stopover and nesting site for many waterfowl.

Al-Hreisha said the reserve is characterized by rich biodiversity, with 329 bird species recorded, 18 mammal species, more than 200 plant species, 81 algae species, two amphibian species, and 163 invertebrate species.

He stressed that this natural and biological diversity strongly supports opportunities for domestic and international tourism in the area. The reserve received 13,980 visitors last year, and the number is expected to rise to more than 15,000 this year. He noted that the reserve, run by the Royal Society for the Conservation of Nature (RSCN), is working to develop innovative tourism programs to attract visitors and enrich their experience within the reserve’s natural sites.
