49/ Recent rainfall in Irbid represents strong boost for agricultural sector, says official

Irbid, Jan. 14 (Petra) - Director of the Irbid Agriculture Directorate Abdel Hafez Abu Orabi said Irbid Governorate has witnessed good rainfall, with the al-Wasatiya area recording the highest daily total at 20 millimeters, followed by the Maru station with 17.8 millimeters and Irbid city with 17 millimeters. He noted that these rainfall amounts represent a strong boost for the agricultural sector, especially as they were geographically well distributed across all districts of the governorate.

Abu Orabi explained that the recorded rainfall figures up to the middle of the current month reflect a significant improvement compared with the same period last year. The cumulative total in the Northern Mazar area jumped to 337.5 millimeters, achieving the highest rainfall percentage in the governorate at 68 percent of its annual average, while the Bani Kinana area recorded a cumulative total of 280 millimeters, equivalent to 62 percent of the general average.

He pointed to the difference between the current season and the previous one, citing Irbid city, which recorded 253.5 millimeters this year compared with only 92.5 millimeters for the same period last year, as well as the Ramtha area, which recorded 158 millimeters compared with 83 millimeters last year.

He said that the number of rainy days reaching 20 days is a highly positive indicator, strengthening farmers’ hopes for field crops and fruit trees of high quality.

He added that successive rainfall does not only contribute to irrigating agricultural crops but also plays a key role in recharging groundwater and providing natural grazing areas. He noted that the directorate continues to closely monitor rainfall developments in order to provide the necessary technical and extension support to all farmers and livestock breeders.
