Amman, Jan 11 (Petra) – FIFA has highlighted the head coach of the national football team, Moroccan Jamal Sellami, within a list of 16 coaches worldwide who possess a unique record combining participation in World Cup finals as players and returning to take part as coaches at the 2026 World Cup. The report, published recently, said Sellami, who represented the Moroccan national team as a player at the France 1998 World Cup finals, is now among an elite group of global coaches who will attend the 2026 World Cup from the technical area, alongside prominent names in world football, including France’s Didier Deschamps, Argentina’s Lionel Scaloni, Italy’s Fabio Cannavaro and the Netherlands’ Ronald Koeman. This international attention comes after the historic achievement Sellami recorded by leading the national team to qualify for the 2026 World Cup finals for the first time in its history, an unprecedented accomplishment for Jordanian football. The report pointed to the importance of coaches who have experienced the World Cup as players, given the technical and psychological expertise they possess, which helps convey the atmosphere of the major tournament to their players and enhance their readiness to compete at the highest levels. Since taking charge of the national team, Sellami has achieved notable results, most prominently leading the national football team to second place at the 2025 Arab Cup, in addition to a marked improvement in the team’s world ranking, placing 64th in the latest classification issued by FIFA.
