8/ Administration Ministry Warns of High Flood Risk as Powerful Cold Front Brings Heavy Rain

Amman, Jan. 1 (Petra)-- The Ministry of Local Administration has warned of elevated risk levels due to the continued impact of a highly effective, slow-moving cold air front affecting several regions of the Kingdom, bringing heavy rainfall and the potential for flash floods in valleys and low-lying areas.

The ministry said the risk level will rise significantly after midnight on Thursday into Friday, as the cold front extends from the north toward central regions. Heavy rainfall is expected to affect the capital, Amman, Balqa Governorate, and parts of Zarqa and Madaba, before later reaching Karak and Tafilah governorates, where rain is forecast to be heavy at times.

The ministry warned of flash flooding in various municipalities across Karak and Tafilah, as well as in parts of central Jordan, including municipalities in Amman, Balqa, Madaba, and Zarqa. Flood risks also extend to the central and southern Jordan Valley, some northern areas of Balqa, and municipalities in Ajloun, Jerash, and parts of Irbid Governorate, where rainy conditions are expected to continue.

According to the ministry, risk levels are particularly high in Karak and parts of Tafilah due to soil saturation following heavy rainfall in recent days. This may lead to strong runoff in valleys, dangerous flash floods, water accumulation on roads, and the possibility of soil and rock landslides, including in the northern and central Jordan Valley areas.

The ministry noted that the peak of the weather system in Karak is expected between midnight and the early morning hours, with the impact later extending to Tafilah and parts of western Ma’an Governorate.

The depression is forecast to gradually move away from the Kingdom during the daytime on Friday, although very cold weather will persist, with a chance of scattered showers at a lower risk level.

The ministry called on municipalities, joint services councils, and municipal affairs directors to raise readiness levels, strengthen field efforts, and operate emergency rooms around the clock. It also urged citizens to exercise caution and avoid valleys and areas where water accumulates, in order to protect public safety.
