26/ Arab Peace Group Condemns Remarks by U.S. Envoy to Israel

Amman, Feb 23 (Petra) - The Arab Peace Group condemned recent remarks attributed to the U.S. ambassador to Israel, Mike Huckabee, in which he spoke about the so-called "Greater Israel from the Nile to the Euphrates" and welcomed the idea of Israel’s control over the entire Middle East, based on religious and historical claims that the group described as fabricated and without foundation.

In a statement issued on Monday, the group said such remarks constitute a serious violation of the sovereignty of many Arab states, including Egypt, Palestine, Jordan, Syria, Iraq, Saudi Arabia and Lebanon, and are in flagrant contradiction with the rules of international law, United Nations resolutions and the Charter of international legitimacy.

The group warned that such positions could lead to dangerous escalation in the region and cause serious harm to its security and stability, in addition to the possibility of negative repercussions for Israel itself.
It pointed out that U.S. interests with Arab countries are strategic at the political, economic and security levels, while Israeli policies, according to the statement, have become an increasing political and economic burden on the United States and contribute to complicating regional conditions rather than supporting stability.

The Arab Peace Group renewed its assertion that a just and comprehensive peace can only be achieved through respect for the sovereignty of states and their internationally recognized borders and recognition of the right of the Palestinian people to establish their independent state with East Jerusalem as its capital.

The Arab Peace Group is chaired by Ali Nasser Mohammed, while former minister Samir Habashneh serves as its secretary-general.
