  22/ Water Ministry launches cybersecurity project aligned with ISO standards

Amman, Feb. 8 (Petra) – The Ministry of Water and Irrigation on Sunday launched a cybersecurity project aligned with the ISO/IEC 27001 standard, marking a step toward strengthening information security across Jordan’s water sector.

The project was launched during a workshop titled "Project to Provide Audit Requirements for the First Phase of Obtaining ISO/IEC 27001 Certification in the Water Sector in Jordan," with the participation of representatives from water companies and other relevant stakeholders.

Secretary-General of the Water Authority of Jordan Sufian Batayneh said the initiative aims to support water-sector institutions in adopting international information security standards, protecting sensitive data from cyberattacks and other digital threats. He noted that the project will enhance cybersecurity and contribute to building a secure and sustainable operational system, in line with the Water Authority’s strategic vision.

Batayneh described the project as a strategic step reflecting the Ministry of Water and Irrigation and the Water Authority’s commitment to strengthening corporate governance, safeguarding information and digital assets, ensuring business continuity, and increasing public trust in water services. He expressed appreciation for the efforts of the German Agency for International Cooperation (GIZ) and the support provided by the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development.

For her part, Yasmin Freichlade, director of the Water Sector Governance Project at GIZ, highlighted the serious repercussions of cyber threats and risks facing critical sectors. She said the project seeks to unify visions, clarify the scope of work and implementation mechanisms, and enhance coordination among partners to ensure effective information security in the water sector.
