21/ Gov't Communication Minister: Professional media combats fake news, protects society

Amman, Feb. 2 (Petra) -- Minister of Government Communication and Government Spokesperson Mohammad Momani stressed Monday that artificial intelligence technologies and digital tools should serve as positive forces supporting development and knowledge. He highlighted the need for young men and women to recognize the power of modern communication technologies and the responsibilities they entail.

Speaking at a dialogue session titled "Media as a Force for Change: Challenges of Public Opinion and Shaping the Future Generation" during the fifth edition of the Saudi Media Forum 2026, Momani emphasized that digital sovereignty has become essential for protecting societies amid rapid technological advancements.

He underlined the importance of critically engaging with information by analyzing and verifying content, and strengthening resilience and social awareness to empower individuals to assess the credibility of information and its sources.

"Media success is achieved when public opinion is shaped by accurate information and sound data," Momani said, stressing the need to use available Arab media resources to combat misinformation, fake news, and hate speech. He noted that the media’s role extends beyond gathering information to analyzing, interpreting, and clarifying its dimensions, while maintaining neutrality and professionalism to preserve credibility and public trust.

Momani highlighted that professional media, through diverse tools and channels, actively shapes awareness and influences decision-making, necessitating its empowerment to remain a guardian of public awareness. He commended Saudi Arabia’s efforts in developing a modern media industry that leverages the latest technologies, including digital media and artificial intelligence, to deliver professional, responsible content that supports development and regional stability.

He affirmed Jordan’s pride in its historical and fraternal ties with Saudi Arabia, noting that the stability and development of neighboring countries are fundamental to Jordan’s own security. Momani described the Jordanian media sector as sovereign, addressing misleading and false information through legal, professional, and awareness-raising measures.

"Targeted misinformation and fake news in the Arab region aim to incite discord, distort facts, and destabilize societies," he said, calling on Arab media to strengthen its role in a changing world with integrity, verification, and clarity. He added that media serves as a vital tool for connecting societies, bridging viewpoints, and unifying discourse, thereby enhancing regional security and stability.
