4/ Jordan Condemns Israeli Tenders for 1,234 Settlement Units East Jerusalem

Amman, Aug. 20 (Petra) -- Jordan condemned the Israeli occupation authorities’ tendering of 1,234 settlement units under the E1 settlement project east of occupied Jerusalem in the occupied West Bank, describing the move as a clear violation of international law and international humanitarian law and of the Palestinian people’s inalienable right to self-determination, end the occupation and establish an independent, sovereign state along the June 4, 1967 lines, with occupied Jerusalem as its capital.

In a statement on Thursday, the Ministry of Foreign and Expatriates Affairs reaffirmed Jordan’s condemnation and absolute rejection of the settlement project and the Israeli government’s continued settlement projects and plans in the occupied West Bank. It said these measures entrench the occupation, clearly undermine international efforts toward a two-state solution, and violate international law and resolutions of international legitimacy.

Ministry spokesperson Ambassador Fouad Al-Majali said the measures violate international law and relevant international resolutions, particularly UN Security Council Resolution 2334, which condemns all Israeli measures aimed at changing the demographic composition, character and status of Palestinian territory occupied since 1967, including East Jerusalem.

He also referred to the advisory opinion of the International Court of Justice, which affirmed the illegality of Israel’s occupation of Palestinian territory and the invalidity of settlement construction and measures to annex parts of the occupied West Bank.

Al-Majali reiterated that Israel has no sovereignty over the occupied Palestinian territory and warned against the Israeli government’s continued expansionist settlement policy and its illegal and illegitimate measures in the occupied West Bank.

He called on the international community to assume its legal and moral responsibilities and compel Israel to halt its unlawful expansionist measures in the West Bank and fulfill the legitimate rights of the Palestinian people to establish their independent state on their national territory.
