Marking World Humanitarian Day, Jordan highlights the pivotal role played by national safety-net institutions like the National Aid Fund (NAF), alongside the vibrant contributions of civil society and youth-led volunteer groups.

Khetam Shneikat, Director General of the NAF, told the Jordan News Agency (Petra) that the annual observance underscores the vital responsibility national institutions bear in supporting vulnerable families. She described the fund as a primary bulwark of Jordan's social protection system, offering a comprehensive suite of programs that extend far beyond financial aid to foster long-term self-reliance and stability.

"Cash assistance and monthly stipends form the core of our support for needy households, complemented by emergency relief programs designed for exceptional circumstances," Shneikat said. She emphasized that such interventions provide a direct lifeline during sudden crises, enabling families to secure basic necessities and navigate economic shocks.

Moving beyond passive relief, Shneikat noted that the NAF integrates economic empowerment into its mandate. By equipping capable beneficiaries with marketable skills, training, and employment linkages, the fund helps transition households from welfare dependency to self-sufficiency.

The fund's comprehensive welfare approach also encompasses in-kind assistance, food parcels, shopping vouchers, school supply distributions, and health initiatives--including subsidized surgical procedures.
Furthermore, Shneikat highlighted the National Physical Rehabilitation Program, which provides assistive medical devices to persons with disabilities and individuals dealing with health challenges, bolstering their independence, mobility, and community integration.

To ensure resources reach the most deserving, the NAF utilizes advanced targeting mechanisms integrated with the Unified National Registry, supported by rigorous field verification. Shneikat noted that ongoing digital transformation and data-driven administrative processes have significantly streamlined service delivery, reduced bureaucratic friction, and enhanced transparency. This official network is reinforced by decentralized branch offices spanning the Kingdom's governorates, bringing services closer to citizens.

Parallel to institutional responses, Jordan’s humanitarian landscape thrives on grassroots volunteerism.

Moayed Al-Maghasbeh, founder of the "Jordan Valley Volunteers"--which secured third place in the Hussein bin Abdullah II Award for Voluntary Work--stressed that humanitarianism begins with empathy and translates into tangible action.

Established in 2017, the initiative has proven that limited resources do not constrain impact. "A volunteer can offer time, effort, or expertise to serve the community," Al-Mughasbeh said. Expanding to a network of over 150 active volunteers, the group executes targeted projects spanning education, social support, youth engagement, and environmental conservation.

Al-Maghasbeh emphasized that embedding a culture of volunteerism requires shifting away from episodic campaigns toward treating community service as a way of life, empowering youth to design local solutions.
