27/ Int'l Maritime Organization Warns Oil Slick From Grounded Tanker Nearing Oman
Amman, Aug. 12 (Petra) -- The International Maritime Organization (IMO) said Wednesday it was notified that an oil leak from the grounded tanker "Caroline Bezinge" will reach Oman's mainland. An IMO spokesperson told Reuters the oil is drifting off the northeastern coast of Qibliyah Island, with quantities expected to reach the mainland. The UN agency said contingency plans have been put in place to address the spill. Oman announced Monday that crude oil leaking from the tanker off a nature reserve in the country had created a slick covering nearly 400 square kilometers. The tanker ran aground off the sultanate's coast on June 30, about 22 nautical miles from the Omani village of Sharbithat, carrying roughly 800,000 barrels of Russian oil bound for Asia. //Petra// NQ
