37/ Jordan’s Medical Corridor Brings Hope to Gaza Children Crossing King Hussein Bridge
King Hussein Bridge, April 28 (Petra) -- Each time a bus carrying children from Gaza crosses the King Hussein Bridge into Jordan, the journey is more than a passage between two places; it is a humanitarian route taking them from a reality weighed down by pain to a horizon open to hope. Here, the Jordanian medical corridor, directed by His Majesty King Abdullah II, takes shape as a lifeline awaited by families in the Gaza Strip seeking to save their children, as living conditions continue to deteriorate by the day. In Gaza, childhood has shifted from play to harsh tasks that can alter lives in an instant. That reality is reflected in the story of 16-year-old Akram, one of 81 children evacuated on Monday by the Jordan Armed Forces, in coordination with the Health Ministry and the World Health Organization, as part of the initiative. "I went out to look for firewood so my family could cook after gas became nearly impossible to obtain in Gaza during the recent war," Akram told Petra. "I knew the task was difficult, but there was no choice." He walked cautiously through rubble, hoping to return with a bundle of wood. As he neared his goal, an explosion changed the course of his life forever. He returned without firewood and without his legs. A similar story is told by 15-year-old Mohammad, though with different details. Speaking in a voice choked with tears, he said: "After a long and exhausting search, I returned to the remains of our home with a small amount of food, then fell asleep to rest." "Moments later, the silence of the night was shattered by a tank shell," he said, describing how he awoke amid destruction, suspended between life and death after the blast struck near his home. He was taken to a hospital in Gaza, where he underwent days of intensive treatment. When Mohammad regained consciousness, he faced a reality he had never imagined: he had lost his left leg, and the other had been severely damaged. What weighed on him most was not the physical pain, but the collapse of his simple dreams of helping his family, replaced by a sense of helplessness far beyond his years. Yousef’s story is no different. He had set out to carry what water he could for his family amid severe shortages in his neighborhood. His steps were heavy, but his hope was simple: to return with enough to quench their thirst. He did not complete the journey. In an instant, everything changed. He returned without water and without his legs after a direct injury. His question was no longer when his family would drink, but how he would walk again and continue his life. Since then, the days have weighed heavily on him as he watches other children run, imagining himself among them. The pain has been greater than his small body could bear, but it has not extinguished his hope entirely. These are not isolated cases but reflect the suffering of an entire generation of children uprooted from school and future dreams, drawn into a cycle of pain and loss. In a moment none of them expected, news arrived that they would receive treatment in Jordan under the "Jordanian Medical Corridor" initiative, launched under royal directives in March 2025 to provide prosthetic limbs and help them stand again. The children and their families described the news as overwhelming joy, saying it was more than treatment it felt like a healing hand restoring hope for a future that had not been closed to them. Mohammad’s mother said the initiative restored hope to her family after her 10-year-old son lost his left hand when an unexploded object detonated while he was playing with it, leaving him facing pain and uncertainty about his future. "We could not contain our joy when we learned he would be treated in Jordan under the medical corridor, to be fitted with prosthetics that will restore part of his ability and self-confidence," she said, adding that such support was not unusual for Jordan and its Hashemite leadership, which has consistently stood by Palestine and its people. //Petra// AF
