18/ Minister launches 'Fortify' initiative to enhance child digital protection
Amman, April 26 (Petra) – Minister of Social Development Wafaa Bani Mustafa on Sunday launched the "Fortify" initiative at Al-Zaytoonah Private University of Jordan, aimed to build a "resilient generation to safely use" technology and smart devices. Addressing the launching ceremony, Bani Mustafa emphasized the initiative's importance, which targets protection of Jordanian children to "safely surf" smart devices. The move, she noted, focuses primarily on raising the parents' awareness and equipping their children with the skills to browse social media, given the significant challenges for leaving children without sufficient guidance and supervision. She stated the Cabinet had decided earlier this year to form the National Committee for the Protection of Children and Adolescents from the Risks Associated with the Use of Social Media and the Internet. On its goals, she stated this decision reflects the government's commitment to protecting Jordan's children and society from the growing digital challenges, enhancing digital safety within families, and providing a safe digital environment. She added that: "Investing in this technology to build a conscious and creative generation requires raising awareness of the risks and consequences of the challenges associated with the multifaceted negative uses of social media and smart applications." The vision, she noted, requires action to address bullying, blackmail, and exploitation, which begin virtually and end in reality, causing tragic consequences that negatively impact individuals, their families, and society as a whole. Bani Mustafa urged university students to protect themselves first, mainly in safeguarding their data and privacy, and avoid succumbing to any form of blackmail or exploitation, amid increasing use of artificial intelligence. She also encouraged these students to help raise awareness among their families and communities, and support younger generations in this area, particularly adolescents and young adults. //Petra// AG
