4/ Rajeb’s Loquat Season Fuels Rural Economy in Ajloun

Amman, April 23 (Petra) -- In the fertile valleys of Rajeb in Ajloun, the loquat harvest has become a defining feature of the spring season, driving rural economic activity and supplying local markets with high-quality fruit.

The crop has expanded steadily in recent years, supported by favorable climate conditions, fertile land, and access to fresh water. Agricultural estimates indicate that around 180,000 trees are cultivated across more than 5,000 dunums, producing between 9,000 and 10,000 tons annually.

Omar Mahasneh, a researcher at the National Agricultural Research Center, said the region offers optimal conditions for loquat cultivation, noting that trees begin producing after three to four years, with yields increasing as they mature.

He emphasized that maintaining quality requires careful management, including pruning, fertilization, fruit thinning, and disease control, particularly against fungal infections that can affect marketability.

For local communities, the loquat season represents a key source of income. Kufranjah Agriculture Director Hazem Amawi said the crop has become an economic pillar in Rajeb, generating seasonal employment and boosting commercial activity during the harvest period, which runs from April to May.

Amawi added that agricultural authorities continue to provide technical support to farmers to enhance productivity and ensure the sustainability of the sector.

Despite its importance, farmers say the sector still faces challenges, including rising production costs, price fluctuations, and limited marketing channels.

They noted that improving marketing mechanisms and enabling direct access to consumers would strengthen returns and support long-term sustainability.

As the harvest season progresses, loquat continues to shape both the agricultural landscape of Ajloun and the livelihoods of the communities that depend on it.
