25/ Cardinal Pizzaballa: Hashemite Custodianship Historic, Enduring Guardian of Holy Sites
Irbid, Apr. 23 (Petra)-- Latin Patriarch of Jerusalem Cardinal Pierbattista Pizzaballa said that the Hashemite Custodianship, led by His Majesty King Abdullah II, represents the strong shield and historic guarantee for Jerusalem’s holy sites, stressing that this guardianship becomes even more vital amid the difficult circumstances facing the Holy City. During his three-day visit to the town of Al-Husn in Bani Obeid District, Irbid governorate, on Thursday, Cardinal Pizzaballa said that Jerusalem and its holy sites remain at the forefront of His Majesty’s priorities. He noted that the celebrations, which began in Jerusalem and continue today in Al-Husn, reflect the unity between the two sides, emphasizing that the solidarity he witnessed demonstrates deeply rooted compassion and confirms that Jordan and Jerusalem are one inseparable entity. Pizzaballa also affirmed that Jerusalem will remain a symbol of noble values despite current challenges, describing His Majesty King Abdullah II as the "light of the region," whose wisdom illuminates the path of harmony and coexistence. He added that Jordan represents a "safe island" and a unique model of fraternity, most clearly reflected in the town of Al-Husn. For his part, Bani Obeid District Governor Ali Al-Hawamdeh reviewed the role of the Hashemite leadership in promoting the values of moderation through the "Amman Message," which rejects extremism and reinforces respect for humanity. He stressed that the Hashemite Custodianship is a firm historical foundation in protecting the holy sites, and that Jordan will remain a fortress of Arab identity and a voice for justice. MP Iyad Al-Jabri expressed the pride of Al-Husn residents in the visit, saying it embodies the meanings of faith and security and helps strengthen the spirit of harmony among the people of the region, which is considered a cradle of authenticity and brotherhood. Father Wajdi Sahaouneh welcomed the Patriarch, saying that Al-Husn offers a model of "deep-rooted brotherhood," not merely coexistence, through the participation of all its residents, Muslims and Christians alike. He added that Al-Husn is one of the Decapolis cities visited by Jesus Christ, highlighting the region’s deep historical roots and the strong ties linking Al-Husn with Jerusalem, noting that popular unity continues to grow under the noble royal vision. //Petra// MF
