27/ Tafilah seminar highlights $33.2 million climate resilience, water efficiency project
Tafilah, April 22 (Petra) – The Greater Tafilah Municipality on Wednesday held a dialogue seminar highlighting the "Building Resilience to Climate Change in Jordan through Improving Water Use Efficiency in the Agricultural Sector" project, implemented in cooperation with the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) and the Water, Energy, and Environment Specialists Consulting Company. The seminar focused on the project’s objectives, implementation components, and planned activities, with emphasis on improving water use efficiency in agriculture and strengthening climate change adaptation measures in the targeted governorates. Project officials said the initiative, funded by the Green Climate Fund at a total cost of $33.2 million, aims to reduce pressure on groundwater resources by promoting alternative and more efficient agricultural practices. It also seeks to enhance the capacity of farmers to adapt to the growing impacts of climate change. They noted that the project will support increased water availability through the storage of treated wastewater, rainwater harvesting from rooftops, and the reduction of domestic water consumption through water-saving technologies. The project is being implemented in partnership with the Ministries of Environment, Agriculture, and Water and Irrigation, alongside the United Nations Development Program (UNDP) and FAO, over a period of seven years. It targets the governorates of Tafilah, Karak, Madaba, and Ma’an within the Dead Sea Basin, areas identified as highly vulnerable to climate change and under increasing water resource pressure. The seminar also reviewed the project’s implementation framework, including institutional roles and key activities, which aim to promote sustainable water management, green building practices, and long-term conservation of water resources in the agricultural sector. //Petra// AJ
