Amman, April 14 (Petra) -- The Ministry of Labour on Tuesday launched a series of workshops under the National Capacity Building Programme on Energy Efficiency, targeting ministry employees with the aim of promoting energy conservation concepts and improving efficiency across government institutions.

Secretary-General of the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources, Amani Al-Azzam, affirmed the ministry’s support for capacity-building initiatives in the field of energy efficiency. She pointed to the ministry’s backing of energy audit studies for several government entities, including the Ministry of Labour, in order to assess current consumption patterns and identify opportunities for improvement based on best technical practices.

She noted that the current phase marks an important transition toward implementing the outcomes of these studies, emphasizing that this requires institutional awareness and active engagement from all employees. She stressed that raising awareness among staff is a fundamental component in achieving national energy efficiency targets.

Al-Azzam added that everyday practices in the workplace play a direct role in reducing energy consumption and improving operational performance, which in turn enhances public spending efficiency and supports environmental sustainability goals. She said the workshops are designed to equip employees with the knowledge and tools needed, while also strengthening their role in supporting the national drive toward energy conservation.

She further highlighted that energy efficiency is a national priority aligned with the Kingdom’s strategic direction, contributing to addressing economic and environmental challenges while enhancing energy security.

Secretary-General of the Ministry of Labour, Abdul Halim Dougan, emphasized that adopting energy efficiency practices in public institutions is no longer optional but a national necessity, particularly in light of rising energy costs and their economic and environmental implications.

He noted that the Ministry of Labour aims to serve as a model for sustainable practices, both in infrastructure and through promoting responsible daily behavior among employees.

Dougan explained that the energy audit of the ministry’s building revealed the potential to reduce energy consumption by up to 20 percent through a set of measures, including replacing conventional lighting with energy-efficient systems, regulating air conditioning temperatures, and implementing operational adjustments to improve efficiency.

He added that the ministry will begin implementing quick-win measures within the current year, particularly those with a payback period of less than two years, while other measures will be rolled out according to a phased plan in the coming year.

In the same context, the German Agency for International Cooperation (GIZ) representative and lead partner in the German Energy Academy (GEA) in Jordan, Ghith Bani Abdulrahman, stressed the importance of building the capacity of energy sector workers in Jordan, as a means of strengthening energy security, training, and employment in this vital sector.

He noted that the academy project is part of cooperation between the German government and the Jordanian government, represented by the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources, in the energy sector.

Director of the training programme at the German Energy Academy affiliated with the German Jordanian University, Dr. Ayman Bataineh, highlighted the importance of conserving energy resources and adopting rational consumption practices, stressing the role of training programmes in enhancing workforce efficiency and skills in this field.

The workshops include training sessions and a vocational programme held at the auditorium of the Vocational Training Corporation under the Ministry of Labour, aimed at strengthening the technical capabilities of staff in energy management and improving efficiency.
