27/ Jordan pushes digital education drive, expands schools in first quarter - ministry report
Amman, April 13 (Petra) -- The Ministry of Education unveiled its first-quarter achievements report for the year, highlighting a package of projects aimed at improving education outcomes, upgrading the school environment, and accelerating digital transformation through pioneering initiatives. The ministry said it had stepped up efforts to advance digital education through innovative programs and upgraded infrastructure, in line with HRH Crown Prince Al Hussein bin Abdullah II's vision to enhance education efficiency through technology. It added that Jordan’s education sector is undergoing a comprehensive digital transformation, with the artificial intelligence-supported "Siraj" platform taking center stage after training more than 80,000 teachers and creating nearly one million student accounts. This has been accompanied by the launch of the unified "Ajyal" platform to develop education management and the expansion of the "Darsak" platform with a vast content library exceeding 20,000 educational videos. The ministry said it had begun equipping 1,500 schools with Wi-Fi services and updating connectivity and cybersecurity agreements for thousands of educational sites, alongside a pilot study conducted in cooperation with Google and the World Bank to provide students with Chromebook devices and assess their impact on academic performance. It added that during the first quarter, it had established 15 new schools with 260 classrooms; implemented 15 classroom expansion projects, added 87 rooms; and carried out maintenance and rehabilitation works in 250 schools. In addition, 34 newly established schools and 50 classroom expansion projects were supplied with school and office furniture, while 490,000 students benefited from the school feeding program. The ministry said it had acquired 14 plots of land and allocated three others to support public-private partnership projects, in line with the government’s plan to build 500 school projects. It said the Cabinet approved the draft Education and Human Resources Development Law and referred it to parliament, which subsequently passed the legislation. The ministry said the law aims to unify the authorities responsible for the education system, improve the quality of its outcomes, and align education outputs with labor market needs and includes the establishment of a national council for human resources development. It added that it had launched the 2026–2030 education strategy, focused on digital transformation and inclusive education, and began implementing the first phase of a school transport project in partnership with the private sector, being introduced for the first time in the kingdom. The initiative benefits 9,089 students and 849 staff across 61 public schools in the southern Badia. The project will provide free school transportation and operate 115 buses equipped with tracking and monitoring systems while creating more than 200 jobs in its initial phase, the ministry said. It also noted that 3,000 teachers enrolled in the professional diploma program, 375 joined educational leadership programs, and around 70,000 teachers were trained on digital learning platforms, alongside the creation of more than one million student accounts. Vocational and technical education (BTEC) specializations were expanded to 14 fields. The ministry said it had introduced five specialized classrooms in schools to accommodate students with moderate and severe intellectual disabilities and prepared 14 additional schools to receive students with disabilities, bringing the total number of equipped schools nationwide to 1,534. It also recruited 200 additional support teachers in special education, raising the total to 1,500, and provided 21 hearing-impaired students with assistive devices to facilitate their integration and enhance learning opportunities. It added that 60 students participated in scientific and technological competitions, achieving advanced positions, including first place globally in the Junior Computing Olympiad, as well as medals and strong results in innovation exhibitions. A total of 4,760 students took part in 20 scientific events at the local level, while King Abdullah II School for Excellence in Zarqa secured second place globally at the Investment and Entrepreneurship Forum in Bahrain. Schools across the kingdom also achieved advanced results in the 2026 El Hassan bin Talal Award for Scientific Excellence. //Petra// AF
