Aqaba, April 7 (Petra) -- The government has extended the operating mandate of Aqaba Marine Services Company for three years, reinforcing stability in port operations as the company advances plans to reduce emissions and modernize maritime services.

The decision, approved by the Cabinet and endorsed by the Board of Commissioners of the Aqaba Special Economic Zone Authority (ASEZA), includes the renewal of the Joint Development Agreement (JDA) with Aqaba Development Corporation, Jordan National Shipping Lines, and Smith & Manalco Jordan Ltd.

Officials said the move supports continuity in critical port services, including pilotage and towing, and signals confidence in the operational framework developed in recent years, particularly in managing key facilities such as the liquefied natural gas terminal.

General Manager Frederik Rutgers said the extension reflects trust in the company’s performance, noting that ongoing investments are focused on upgrading the fleet and reducing service times for maritime operations, with the aim of lowering costs for shipping lines and enhancing Aqaba’s competitiveness in the Red Sea.

The company has invested around JD43 million to expand and modernize its fleet and operational capabilities, and has handled more than 45,000 vessels since its establishment without recording major incidents or delays, according to company data.

As part of its forward strategy, the company is working with Aqaba Development Corporation on a plan to reduce carbon emissions from its fleet and equipment over the next three years, aligning with international environmental standards and the global shift toward sustainable maritime transport.

Rutgers said the transition toward greener operations is expected to strengthen the port’s appeal to international shipping lines that increasingly prioritize environmental performance in route selection.

The company employs more than 200 Jordanian staff, including technical and maritime operations personnel, with ongoing training programs aimed at maintaining operational standards and building local expertise.

The extension is seen as reinforcing a model of public-private cooperation in the port sector, supporting service efficiency and contributing to a more competitive logistics environment.

The development comes as Aqaba marks the 25th anniversary of ASEZA, highlighting the port city’s role as a key gateway for trade and logistics in the region.
